THE
MAN
.
Outside of
training Kang Zhiqiang was a different man, or at least one
was privileged to be in the presence of the greater man. He was sharp-witted
and bold, never afraid to crack a joke or laugh loudly at any worthy
attempt at humour. He never shied from public displays of affection
and would often grab hold of friends or students in inescapable bear
hugs (despite the fact they often turned into complicated choke holds
or locks).
Always dapper, he sang like an opera star and danced with suprising
grace whenever the occasion permitted. Kang loved nothing more
than to sit for hours in the company of his martial family and friends,
drinking to brotherhood and celebrating life in the time-honoured, Shandong
fashion. A hard but deeply kind man, built in the mould of the martial
heroes of old, Kang Zhiqiang was a rough diamond, loved dearly
by all those whose lives he touched.
Years of hard work, hard training and equally hard living saw Master
Kang Zhiqiang leave this world peacefully on November 11th,
2002. His loving wife and son survive him, his martial legacy carried
on by his second son, Brendan Tunks (Bai Renda) and the Tanglang
Quan She (Mantis Boxing Society) of Australia.
